  • Berlin Wall came down on October 18 when the Communist regime of East Germany fell. Berliners took part in taking down the Berlin Wall that had divided the city for 27 years.
  • An earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale hit the San Francisco area.
  • Driving Miss Daisy wins Best Picture at the Academy Awards
