Transit Technology - High Speed Rail

High speed rail is generally applied to the longer distance intra-urban travel and serves to connect cities 50 to 500 miles apart. Trains are usually powered by one or more electric engines powered from an overhead wire system.
- Serves moderate to high passenger volumes - 3,000 to 22,000 per hour one-way
- Very high speed - in excess of 200 mph
- Serves very long trips
- Very distant station spacing - 25 to 50 miles
- Exclusive right-of-way
- High to moderate operating and maintenance cost/very high capital cost.
