Overview
The County's pharmacy program is a self-insured program administered through Express Scripts, an independent pharmacy benefit management provider. By self-insuring this program, the County is able to offer a more enhanced formulary as well as affordable co-pays.
It is very easy to use your Express Scripts benefits in person or by internet. Using the internet you can review your RX profile, re-order scripts, compare prices, etc.

Mandatory Mail Order Program
The County has a mandatory mail order program for maintenance medications. A maintenance medication is a prescription drug that treats an ongoing condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. Your benefit covers up to two fills of each maintenance medication at a participating retail pharmacy. Afterwards, you will need to order these prescriptions from the Express Scripts Pharmacy. Otherwise, you will pay an increased amount at your retail pharmacy.
NEW PRESCRIPTION
- Ask your doctor to write two prescriptions:
- One for a 30-day supply to fill at your local retail pharmacy while the mail order is being processed; and
- One for a 90-day supply and appropriate refills, if applicable, for up to a maximum of one year. One mail order fill should equal a 90 day supply of the drug.
- Complete a Home Delivery Order Form (available from Employee Benefit Services or Express Scripts) and mail your form and prescription to the address on the form.
Helpful Hint: If you are unsure if a new maintenance medication will be right for you, have your doctor write two prescriptions; one retail prescription to cover 60 days and another prescription for one year for mail order. After your first refill, if the maintenance medication is right for you, submit your mail order prescription as it will take up to 14 days to process and deliver to your home.
