Conservation Land and Green Space Categories
The Conservation Land and Green Space Inventory was created to list predominantly undeveloped lands which, due to their ecological value or their connectivity potential, were recommended for acquisition by Broward County through the 2000 Land Preservation Bond Program.
These sites were identified mainly by Broward County Environmental Protection Department EPD (formerly DPEP) during an 18-month period which started in January 1999. Including in the screening of the remaining natural lands from EPD were considered other land acquisition proposals submitted by municipalities, environmental groups, County Commissioners, and County residents.
The result of EPD endeavour was an inventory of sites which represented the best remaining unprotected natural and connector lands in Broward County.
The potential acquisition projects were submitted to the Land Preservation Advisory Board; and on April 19, 2001, the Board recommended that the County Commission direct County staff to negotiate with the owners to secure the aquisition of these sites. Once the negotiations were completed and agreements reached with the future land managing entities (municipalities or county), the sites were submitted for purchase recommendation to the Advisory Board.
As of May of 2008, 25 Conservation Lands have been acquired and 17 sites of Green Spaces comprising 271 acres.
