Elevator Frequently Asked Questions

Q. When would I need an elevator permit?
A. For any alterations or installation of a new elevator or lifting device.

Q. Who can install or repair elevating devices?
A. Only an elevator company licensed with the State of Florida. To check on the status of an elevator contractor’s license, please call the Bureau of Elevator Safety at (850) 414-1249.

Q.What elevator or lifting device requires a permit?
A. All elevators, wheelchair lifts, stairway lifts, escalators, moving walks and dumbwaiters require a permit for installation and/or alteration.

Q. I am building a new residential home and the city requires that the Elevator Section review the plans. What are the requirements and how many copies of the plans are needed for this review?
A. Submit three (3) copies of the layout of the design plans.

Q. How long is the waiting period for plan approval?
A. The waiting period for plan approval is 5-10 business days and the plan examiner will notify you when the plans have been reviewed.

INSPECTION QUESTIONS

Q. Who should I contact to schedule my annual witness test?
A. You should contact your elevator maintenance company to schedule your annual inspection with a Broward County elevator inspector.

Q. My elevator company has scheduled my annual test after the August 1st deadline. When do I receive my elevator renewal invoice?
A. You will receive your renewal invoice upon receiving confirmation that a satisfactory annual inspection has been performed.

Q. My elevator/wheelchair lift has been installed, and I am ready for inspection. What is the next step?
A. Your elevator company has to contact an elevator inspector directly to schedule an inspection.

Q. I am installing a new elevator and want to temporarily use the elevator for construction use. What are the requirements to obtain a Temporary permit?
A. To obtain a temporary permit, you will have to contact the Elevator Section at 954-765-4400  Opt. 6.

Q. What is a 2-stop elevator?
A. A 2-stop elevator is an elevator that stops only on two floor levels.

EXCEPTIONS

If the elevator serves only two adjacent floors, and is covered by a full service maintenance contract, an inspection is not required before the issuance of the renewal invoice; however, you will be required to have an annual inspection before the expiration of your elevator certificate.

Q. I have received a notice of violation letter. What is required to comply with this notice?
A. At the time of the inspection, the elevator inspector left the yellow portion of the inspection report noting the violations with a representative of your building or the elevator maintenance company. The Elevator Section has not received notification that the violation(s) have been corrected. Please send the yellow portion of the elevator inspection report verifying that the violations have been corrected, this report has be signed by the elevator maintenance company or owner affirming that you have complied with Florida Statute 399.

Q. What is the fine for non-compliance for inspection violations?
A. Florida Statute 399 allows Broward County to assess an administrative fine of $1,000 for not renewing your Certificate of Operation.

LICENSE QUESTIONS

Q. What is required to receive a Certificate of Operation?
A. You must contact your elevator maintenance company to verify that the annual safety test has been performed or scheduled before receiving your Certificate of Operation.

Q. When does the Certificate of Operation expire?
A. Your Certificate of Operation expires annually on August 1st.

Q. What should I do if my Certificate of Operation has expired?
A. Contact the Elevator Section at 954-765-4400 Opt. 6 to find out the status of your elevator.

Q. What is the fine for not renewing the Certificate of Operation for the elevator(s)?
A. The Florida Statute 399 authorizes Broward County to assess an administrative fine of $1,000 for not renewing your certificate of operation.

Q. I have not received the reminder letter for my Certificate of Operation. Which mailing address was the reminder letter sent to?
A. The reminder letter was sent to the mailing address on record.

Q. How do I get a duplicate Certificate of Operation?
A. Please contact the Elevator Section at 954-765-4400 Opt. 6 to request a duplicate Certificate of Operation (no charge for this service).

Q. Who do I contact if the building has been sold, changed owners and/or new mailing address?
A. Fax a letter to the Elevator Section at 954-765-4574 or mail; Building Code Services, 1 North University Drive, Plantation, FL  33324.

Q. Who do we contact if our elevator maintenance company has changed or the elevator contract has expired?
A. Notify the Elevator Section in writing either by fax 954-765-4574 or by mail; Building Code Services, 1 North University Drive, Plantation FL  33324.

COMPLAINT QUESTIONS

Q. Who should I call if my elevator is not functioning properly?
A. You must call your building owner or property management company if your elevator is not functioning properly.

Q. Who do I contact if I have a complaint?
A. You need to contact your building owner or property management company.

Q. What if I do not receive a response to my complaint from the owner/property management company or elevator maintenance company?
A. An elevator technician will fill out a complaint form and request that an elevator inspector investigate the complaint.

Q. Who do I call if someone is stuck inside an elevator?
A. Call 911. Please do not pry open the elevator door as this is a safety hazard.

ACCIDENT QUESTIONS

Q. How do I report an accident?
A. Call the Elevator Section at 954-765-4400 Opt 6. Accident report(s) could be mailed directly to the customer directly. Also, inform the customer that the original accident report should be mailed within five (5) days to the Building Code Services Division, 1 N. University Drive, Plantation, FL 33324. *The Elevator Section will forward a copy of accident report to the Bureau of Elevator Safety.

Q. What if there is an accident after-hours?
A. Please notify your elevator maintenance company and contact 911.
