Broward Municipal Services Report

COMMISSION GOAL
Ensuring economic opportunities for all people and businesses in Broward. Offering sustainable, compatible, innovative housing options for all income-levels, including integrated, permanent supportive housing.

Many improvements have been made in the Municipal Services District to enhance the quality of life for residents in Broward’s unincorporated areas.

On June 21st, a ribbon-cutting was held to celebrate the new outdoor Destination Fitness Center in Reverend Samuel Delevoe Memorial Park. The Healthy Community Zone in collaboration with Broward Regional Health Planning Council received $54,090 from the Heath Foundation of South Florida. Neighborhood Parks staff installed the Center in a prominent location where residents, families and visitors can have easy access to 23 pieces of world-class exercise equipment. Destination Fitness is quickly becoming a community hotspot contributing to the goal of making Healthy Community Zone parks health hubs.

There were 1,173 registered participants in the Summer Recreation Program at six neighborhood parks located in the Municipal Services District. The Office Depot Foundation donated backpacks containing essential school supplies to children attending.

In June, a Career, Education, & Networking Fair was held by Broward Municipal Services District and various County agencies. Career seekers connected with public and private organizations, education centers, and career development professionals at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center. Employment candidates engaged directly with dozens of recruiters from various companies.

The Office of Economic and Small Business Development conducted a second Employment Resources Workshop in July at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center. The goals of the workshop were to provide residents with information on programs available for those who may be hard-to-hire and/or in need of additional resources to prepare themselves to be hirable.  The workshop also provided information on assistance programs to employers who give jobs to hard-to-hire County residents, and provided information on available assistance programs to small business owners.

Six Comprehensive Plan Workshops were held by Planning and Development Management -  in Broadview Park, North County and Central County -  to give residents an opportunity to share their community needs and priorities. This information will be used to develop and prioritize new goals, objectives and policies that can be included in the County’s Comprehensive Plan.

Safe Streets Phase I is complete in the Broward Municipal Services District with the installation of decorative crosswalk elements, landscaped medians, bike lanes, ADA compliant curbs, pedestrian crossing with flashing beacon, painted sidewalks, and logo of the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center in the intersection of NW 27 Avenue and Sistrunk Boulevard. Phase II is scheduled to begin in 2018 and will continue the transformation of NW 27th Avenue. The Safe Streets projects represents an investment of $2.9 million in the unincorporated communities.

Community cleanups take place on a regular basis, with the focus on making neighborhoods clean, vibrant places. Thanks to community cleanup champions, Solid Waste and Recycling Services removes more than 3,000 tons of litter from District communities annually. Participating students earn community service hours.

In August, the Libraries Division, in partnership with T-Mobile, Broward School Board and Career Source Broward, began making tablet devices available for eligible residents to use to access the internet. Tablets can be checked out at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center.
