COMMISSION GOAL

Broward County conducts public education and outreach activities throughout the year to ensure residents are aware of programs and services that can enhance their quality of life.

The Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau promotes travel to Broward County locally, nationally and globally as a premier leisure, convention and business destination for the continual economic benefit of our community.

Broward’s 311 Call Center is a convenient single point of contact for information and assistance with County programs and services. A team of multi-lingual call takers answers more than 300,000 calls each year. To connect with your County, call 311 or 954-831-4000. Or, call toll-free at 888-311-BRWD. The Mosquito Control Section of the Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division implemented a community outreach program to help keep the mosquito-borne Zika virus at bay, which poses a particular risk to pregnant women and women of childbearing age. Employees visited all OB/GYN clinics in Broward County and spoke face-to-face with more than 300 doctors regarding preventative measures for the Zika virus, and provided larvicide tablets for distribution to high-risk patients. The outreach was expanded to daycare centers, where parents were encouraged to help prevent mosquito breeding habitats, TIP standing water; TOSS unneeded items that hold water; and TREAT standing water with larvicide. All residents are encouraged to do their part to help Zap Zika in Broward.

The Broward County Academy is a 10-week program where residents learn how County government works and how they can become involved. It was first introduced in 2007 as an 8-week program which ran twice in February of that year and once in 2008. It was then cut due to budget restraints. The Academy was revived in 2015 as an 8-week program but after requests from Academy participants, it was expanded to a 10-week program. Now in it's third consecutive year, it has nearly 200 total graduates, some of whom are among the more than 700 residents who serve on advisory boards and committees which provide community input to the County Commission. To apply for the Academy, visit Broward.org/Academy. To learn more about service on a County Board or Committee, visit Broward.org/Intergovernmental.

The Office of Public Communications and various Agencies such as Parks, Libraries, Port, Airport, Economic Development, Human Resources and many more use Social Media (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube) to spread the word about County services and events, in addition to using news releases to inform the Media about accomplishments, services, and events. Over 8.6 million people visited the website more than 16.5 million times.
