Encouraging investments in renewable energy, sustainable practices and environmental protection |
With more than 2,600 miles of canals and levees, 1,300 water
control structures and 66 pump stations, Broward County’s regional water
management system is one of the largest in the world.
In addition to promoting tourism, Broward’s 24 miles of
beaches are also a critical habitat for sea turtles, shore birds and other
marine wildlife.
The County Commission took action to support climate
adaption planning with creation of a future conditions map series as part of
the Broward County Code of Ordinances. The Board adopted the first map of the
series, a future conditions wet-season average groundwater elevation map. These
actions provide critical updates to our regulatory processes to ensure proper
accounting for climate change and sea level rise impacts as part of project
design and permitting for infrastructure across our county. The County’s
climate resilience activities include planning for two feet of sea level rise
by 2060 and energy initiatives to achieve an 80 percent reduction in emissions
by 2050.
The County has continued to lead in the celebration of
diverse environmental programs with record attendance for the 15th
Annual Water Matters Day event, hosting of 36th Annual Coastal Clean
Up, and implementation of year one of the Broward Property Assessed Clean
Energy (PACE) Program, realizing more than
10,085 energy efficiency, renewable energy and hurricane protection projects
across the County, totaling $42.4 million in investment and saving an estimated
3.9 million kWh of energy.
Broward was the first county in the U.S. to be awarded the
prestigious 4-STAR Community rating, for efforts to achieve environmental, economic and social sustainability.
Popular water conservation programs include ConservationPays and NatureScape Broward, both of which encourage
resident participation in conserving one of our most precious community
resources.
