Message from the Broward County
Board of County Commissioners
We live in a diverse multi-ethnic and urban County of 1.7 million people. Just look around and you will see the rich diversity that has made our County a home for those seeking economic opportunity, individual freedom and a superior quality of life. According to the 2000 census, twenty percent of our residents are Black and seventeen percent are of Hispanic origin. One in five was born in a foreign country and more than half of our residents were born outside of Florida. We are a real melting pot, a microcosm of the United States.
As we look to the future migration into Broward County will continue because the lifestyle, economic opportunities and climate will attract new residents. Many will come from Latin America and the Caribbean. By 2030, Broward County's Office of Urban Planning and Redevelopment projects that the County's population will reach 2.5 million people from many diverse ethnic backgrounds. More information about our changing demographics is at "Broward by the Numbers" on the Broward County website.
With a large population reflecting widely diverse religious, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, it is important that we understand and respect each other. The diversity of our community is an asset that we must value and celebrate.
The Broward County Diversity Advisory Council, formerly known as the Multi-Ethnic Advisory Board, since its inception in 1990, has taken the lead in bringing all segments of the population together in a spirit of friendship and understanding. As we get to know each other better, we will find that our values, aspirations and dreams are similar. Broward County has so much to gain from our wonderful diverse community.
