Dear Broward County Residents,
I was elected to the Board of County Commissioners in 2000 and prior to that I served in the Florida House of Representatives for eight consecutive years. I recently ended a year-long term as Mayor of Broward County.
I am honored to represent the residents of District 9, which includes portions of the cities of Fort Lauderdale, Lauderdale Lakes, Lauderhill, North Lauderdale, Oakland Park, Pompano Beach, Wilton Manors, Sunrise, Tamarac and Plantation.
There are a number of things going on in our community that I want to bring your attention to.
The first, and perhaps most exciting, is the opening of the 110-acre Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill. This great park includes the first public venue for cricket in the United States: an event field with 5,000 covered seats and additional seating for 15,000. With four lighted soccer/football fields, tennis and baseball courts, a nature trail, covered playgrounds, corporate pavilions and picnic shelters, there’s something for everyone at the Central Broward Regional Park.
We have continued to make great progress on the construction of affordable housing in the central county neighborhoods of Roosevelt Gardens and Washington Park. Contracts have been awarded, or are in the process of being finalized, for 66 affordable single family homes and the next phases of the project will see more houses built in these neighborhoods, as well as the neighborhoods of Boulevard Gardens and Franklin Park.
We also recently celebrated a groundbreaking of the Renaissance in Lauderhill, an affordable housing project that provided 27 workforce priced single-family homes in Central Broward County.
Broward County is also working together with the cities of district nine to improve the lives of our shared residents. New interlocal agreements with Lauderhill, Plantation and Oakland Park have earmarked more than 5-million dollars for improvements in Lauderhill on the State Route 7 corridor. $3.8 million may be used in Central Lauderhill for park and roadway improvements; and up to $13 million is allocated for Oakland Park for a variety of improvement projects.
We have recently completed the twelfth successful year of the Neighborhood Improvement Program. To date, 43 bid packages—for a total of $435 million— ave been completed or are underway. This has resulted in the placement of more than 140 miles of sanitary sewer, the installation of 135 miles of water mains and the laying of over 115 miles of drainage pipes. These improvements have eliminated nearly 8,000 septic tanks. Work in the Broward Estates, St. George and Roosevelt Gardens neighborhoods has been completed, and is continuing on schedule in West Ken Lark and Rock Island. Residents now have new sidewalks, improved water quality, and better drainage, which has led to a better quality of life and home value improvements in District 9.
Broward County continues to grown in population and diversity. Broward County had more then 1.7 million residents, which makes us the second largest county in the state. Planning wisely to accommodate Broward County’s growth and sustaining a strong economy is of paramount importance to me.
I realize that every decision the Broward County Board of County Commissioners makes has a potential impact on the quality of life that we all share and your opinion is very important to me.
