The Board of County Commissioners has chosen District 4 Commissioner Ken Keechl to serve as mayor of Broward County, and District 6 Commissioner Sue Gunzburger to serve as vice mayor. Both will serve a one-year term. Mayor Keechl was first elected to the Commission in 2005, and Vice Mayor Gunzburger in 1992. Broward County Commissioner Kristin Jacobs gave remarks and a presentation at a congressional briefing this past week on adapting to the impacts of climate change, and the newly-signed South Florida Regional Climate Change Compact among Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and Monroe counties. The goal of the briefing was to communicate to Congress the critical role of local governments in addressing the climate challenge. The Board of County Commissioners approved the 2010 State Legislative Program at their November 17 meeting. The 2010 State Legislative Program includes legislative proposals and appropriations issues as well as guiding policy principles. A joint workshop of the Board and the Broward Legislative Delegation will be held on December 1 at the Governmental Center, 115 S. Andrews Ave., Room 430, Fort Lauderdale, following the morning Commission meeting. The workshop provides the opportunity for the Board and Legislative Delegation to discuss and promote Broward County goals. The Broward County Office of Economic and Small Business Development has scheduled a public meeting to gather input on the New Targeted Industries Study on Thursday, December 3, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Broward County Convention Center, 1950 Eisenhower Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. The yearlong study was intended to assess the opportunities for recruiting high growth, new and emerging industries that will create high-wage/high skilled job opportunities consistent with Broward County's overall economic development strategies. Officials at the Broward County Health Department announced today expanded hours for the H1N1 High Risk Vaccination Clinic located at the Fort Lauderdale National Guard Armory. The H1N1 High Risk Vaccination Clinic will operate every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Expanded hours will start Thursday, November 19, 2009.
