Plans will move forward to build a new Broward County Courthouse in downtown Fort Lauderdale with $208 million in financing using non-voted debt and with Build America Bonds that are set to expire in December 2010. The total cost of the courthouse, including demolition, landscaping, connectors and 120 secured parking spaces, is $328 million. Phyllis Braswell, an employee of Broward County for more than 34 years, has been named the new Director of Fleet Services Division for Broward County, according to Chris Walton, director of the Transportation Department. Braswell, who had been serving as acting director since May 2009, was the assistant director of Fleet Services since January 2000. In that capacity, she was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the division and oversaw a staff of more than 40 in all areas of the division, including maintenance, financial management, inventory, safety and countywide fueling. The Broward Legislative Delegation approved their local bill agenda for the 2010 Legislative Session at meetings held on January 5, 7 and 26, 2010. The bills that will be presented to the Florida Legislature for approval are: 1. South Broward Utilities Advisory Board Membership; 2. Broward Independent Fire District; 3. Special Assessment to Fund Law Enforcement Services; 4. North Springs Improvement District; 5. Traffic Violations on Private Roads; 6. Broward Office of Inspector General; 7. City of Parkland Annexation; 8. City of Fort Lauderdale Annexation; 9. City of Tamarac Annexation; and 10. Annexation of parcel into Lauderhill. The sixty-day Legislative Session begins March 2, and concludes April 30, 2010. According to Broward County Permitting, Licensing and Consumer Protection Division more than 300 temporary permits are expected to be issued for operators of limousines, luxury sedans and shuttle vans who wish to expand their fleet to accommodate the visitors for the Super Bowl, Sunday, February 7. Operators can apply for permits through the close of business on Friday, February 5. The permits are issued only to limousine operators who are already licensed to operate in Broward County and who want to expand their fleet, or to out-of-county operators who meet the requirements of the temporary permit program. A new premium 31-Day bus pass can now be purchased online for $85. The pass allows unlimited rides for 31 consecutive days on the new 95 Express bus service. For the seventh consecutive year, Broward County Transit is partnering with the 18th Annual Florida Renaissance Festival organizers by providing $3 off adult admission coupons on the buses. Passengers get the discount by presenting the coupon at the gate (not valid with any other offer and good for adults only) anytime during the five weekends of medieval history and entertainment, February 13 to March 14, at Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach. U.S. census forms are available in 60 languages. In 2008, 36 percent of Broward County residents who were 5 years or older spoke a language other than English at home. The County's Lauderdale Lakes Branch library, located at 3521 N.W. 43rd Ave., closed its doors Monday, January 25, in anticipation of the future opening of a new library at 3580 W. Oakland Park Blvd. in Lauderdale Lakes. Staff is in the process of moving library materials from the old to the new library early February and new library materials will be scheduled for delivery to the new library soon. Library computers, communications, phone systems, etc. will be installed in February. The new library should open with a ribbon cutting ceremony in late February or early March. |
