First Rabies Case of 2006
Confirmed in Fort Lauderdale
The state's Broward County Health Department extended
the existing Rabies Alert Area following an incident
on March 17 involving a raccoon bitten by a dog in southwest
Fort Lauderdale. Officials confirmed the raccoon was
captured and tested positive for rabies. The new Rabies
Alert Area extends from U.S. 1 on the east to U.S. 27
on the west and from Southwest/Southeast 17th Street
on the north to Sheridan Street on the south. The latest
confirmed rabies case is the first incident this year
in Broward County and the 35th reported case since July
2000.
Broward County Animal Care and Regulation Division officers
are now canvassing the neighborhood where the raccoon
was found-in the vicinity of Southwest 10th Avenue and
Southwest 22nd Street-to advise residents of the occurrence
and to distribute literature on safety precautions.
All cats and dogs in Broward County, four months or
older, are required to be licensed and vaccinated for
rabies. To report any sick or injured animals, residents
are advised to call Animal Care Dispatch at 954-359-1313,
ext. 400, from 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m., weekdays; on evenings

Commission Approves
Airport Cell Phone Lot
The Broward County Commission recently
approved plans to construct a 50-space, short-term parking
lot for motorists waiting for deplaning passengers at
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The
free parking lot will enable residents with cell phones
to park their automobiles while they wait for a phone
call to pick up arriving passengers. The lot is expected
to relieve congestion at the airport, caused in part
by motorists circling the facility until planes land.
Last year, more than 16,000 citations were given to
drivers who parked their cars illegally along roadways
leading to the airport terminals while waiting for passengers
to arrive. The lot will take several months to build,
at an estimated cost of $283,000. Miami and Palm Beach
International airports have similar cell phone parking
lots.
