Broward County’s diverse environmental resources range from the coral reefs in the Atlantic Ocean, to our miles of beautiful beaches, to the sawgrass wetlands of the Everglades. Developing and implementing sound strategies for the protection and management of such diverse environmental resources could not be accomplished without a strong local environmental agency, such as Broward County’s Environmental Protection Department. Broward County is fortunate to have a Board of County Commissioners which is consistently supportive of environmental protection efforts.
Broward County is rapidly approaching build-out of undeveloped land and must look to redevelopment to accommodate future population growth. While it has been relatively easy during the past 100 years of Broward’s development history to supply drinking water from our very productive Biscayne Aquifer, we are approaching the point where we will no longer be able to depend on such traditional sources of water. Working with Broward County’s Water & Wastewater Services and the South Florida Water Management District, one of our biggest challenges in the future will be to study and develop alternative water supplies to accommodate the approximately 1 million additional people who will call Broward County home in the next 20 years.
With our outstanding staff of scientists, engineers, and support personnel, I feel confident we will meet our future challenges.
