Some Thoughts On the 2000 Census
The decennial census will shortly begin. For Broward County businesses, an accurate count is a matter of some importance. We should consider that Census data is used when allocating State and Federal dollars. We want to make sure that we receive our fair share. When looking at infrastructure maintenance and replacement projects I often wonder if we are receiving all the money we may be entitled to from those State and Federal dollars. Without an accurate census count this may not be possible. If this is the case, where will the other money come from? I think we all know the answer. An accurate census helps ensure equitable distribution of resources. We should also consider the fact that the census is the basis for allocating seats in both State and Federal Legislatures. We want to make sure that our interests are represented and that we have the proper number of Representatives. Finally, there is the marketing data that will be generated from the Census. For business owners, this can help them better target their markets and allocate their resources more efficiently. There are many other good reasons we should all support a full and accurate Census in 2000. These were just a few and a little food for thought.
