Extension Education Urban Horticulture
From the apartment dweller to the homeowner on large acreage -- Master Gardeners, Horticulture Technicians and Extension Agents can help with landscape, gardening and pest control questions. Formal and informal educational programs help Broward County residents with all their horticultural, environmental and pest control informational needs.
The Master Gardeners are one of the most successful elements of the residential Horticulture Program. Individuals from the community receive extensive horticultural training. In return they contribute an equivalent number of volunteer hours back to the Division. These volunteers help answer questions from the thousands of residents who contract or visit the Division annually.
The Florida Yards and neighborhoods program and Environmental Landscape Management program are two of the more successful programs offered by the Division. These efforts are designed to help residents maintain attractive landscapes while reducing the pesticides, fertilizer and water used. Reducing yard landscape wastes is also emphasized through techniques like leaving lawn clippings and compost.
Community Gardening is another program conducted by the Division. Residents are trained in developing and managing vacant property in their area to transform it into productive and attractive gardens that are the pride of the residents.
Also, be sure to look for the horticulture television show DOWN TO EARTH GARDENING on your local cable access station.
