Hurricane/Disaster Handbook
After the horrendous Hurricane Seasons of 2004 and 2005, we all probably look at hurricane reports and warnings differently and take them more seriously. The devastation and destruction of homes and communities following Hurricane Katrina, and our own South Florida experience with Hurricane Wilma will never be forgotten. While it did not reach the level of devastation of Katrina, many of our friends and neighbors have had their lives seriously disrupted, and will take years to get back to “normal”.
Consequently, the need to be more diligent and effective in preparing for disaster has become so important.
To that end, the University of Florida, IFAS Extension has an informative “Disaster Handbook” that should be reviewed. It is located at: http://disaster.ifas.ufl.edu.
This Handbook contains a wide range of information regarding both planning and recovering from a disaster. I have listed direct links to some of the information that I believe would be most pertinent to a majority of our South Florida residents. Certainly where you live will determine what is most relevant to you. I encourage you to print the information that is most important to you and to keep it with your own family disaster plan. In the unfortunate event that you need to evacuate, take it with you--there is excellent information on how to safely re-enter a building, information that might well save your life.
The Disaster Handbook is very complete, but it can be overwhelming! Some of the Handbook information is specifically for governments, and some is for families and homeowners. Following our selection that we feel best suits your needs along with information that was written by your Broward County Extension Education Agents.
