The County has implemented a variety of actions in an effort to reduce energy consumption and move toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions, thereby reducing the County’s carbon footprint. Broward County Provides Training to Municipalities on How to Measure their Carbon Footprints
The Broward County Pollution Prevention, Remediation and Air Quality Division recently hosted more than 60 representatives from Broward County cities and towns, as well as several environmental consultants, in a training session on how to develop greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventories.
Held at the South Regional/Broward College Library in Pembroke Pines, which was the first LEED Certified building in the County, the training included an overview of the methodology used for Broward County's government operations and community-wide GHG emissions inventories. A panel of experts representing many County agencies provided information on sources of data, lessons learned, data gaps and recommendations for using the Clean Air and Climate Protection software. Cold Ironing Exploration Gets "Green Light" at Port Everglades
Port Everglades got the "green light" today from the Broward County Commission to begin exploring the possibility of installing shore-side power, commonly called "cold ironing," at the new Cruise Terminal 18, which will be the year-round homeport terminal for Royal Caribbean International's Oasis-class ships. If deemed fiscally and operationally feasible, Port Everglades will become the first seaport on the East Coast of the United States to install cold ironing. More..
Green Efforts in Broward County Operations Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions
A recently released environmental report finds that Broward County government exceeded its annual reduction goal of greenhouse (GHG) emissions -- carbon footprint -- in 2008 with an estimated reduction of 10,184 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalence (eCO2). Broward County Government has joined the United States Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) WasteWise program, a voluntary partnership program that seeks to reduce solid waste through innovative waste prevention and recycling techniques. The Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau is working with local hotels and the Florida Green Lodging Program to protect and preserve Florida's environment. The Florida Green Lodging Program recognizes and rewards environmentally conscientious lodging facilities in the state. Through this rapidly growing program, Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection encourages the lodging industry to conserve and protect Florida's natural resources.
