Broward Addiction Recovery Division
A Place to Turn For Recovery

We are:

The Broward Addiction Recovery Division provides assistance to individuals and their families experiencing alcohol and/or other drug related problems. The Division operates the Broward Addiction Recovery Centers (BARC).

These centers offer a variety of substance abuse treatment,
education and prevention programs.

We believe that:

  • Recovery is possible for alcoholics and drug addicts;
  • Addiction is a family disease;
  • Individuals and families can grow and change;
  • Clients have a right to confidential treatment;
  • Self-help groups are an essential part of recovery.

Our services:

Our services are centered on individual needs. An assessment determines which services will be most appropriate for each client. Clients are then referred to appropriate treatment programs within BARC.

All fees are based upon the client's ability to pay. Individuals receive services without regard to race, creed, color or national origin.

Our programs:

DETOXIFICATION---This unit offers medically supervised detoxification from alcohol and/or drugs. In addition to medical stabilization, clients participate in an individualized assessment. Education and information regarding addiction and recovery is provided to clients and their families. Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings are conducted daily.

The detoxification program varies depending on clients' need. Each client completing this program will receive a referral to continue treatment services within BARC or to another appropriate agency.

NON-RESIDENTIAL DETOX---N.R.D., is an innovative fifteen- to twenty-one-day treatment program operating Monday through Friday. This program provides services for those whose primary drug of choice is crack cocaine and who are not presently in need of medical detoxification.

N.R.D. uses a holistic approach to treatment, focusing on the compulsive behavior that is characteristic of addiction. This program is sensitive to the cultural and individual needs of this population. Upon completing N.R.D., clients are referred to another program within BARC or to another appropriate agency.

OUTPATIENT/OUTREACH---The Outpatient/Outreach Units provide non-emergency information for the entire BARC program. After assessment, clients are referred to appropriate programs within BARC. Outpatient services are provided for all stages of recovery from early stabilization to counseling for early recovery and therapy for the psychological adjustment issues of ongoing recovery. Family and significant others also participate in treatment.

PERINATAL ADDICTION SERVICES---These programs provides residential, day treatment and outpatient services to pregnant women addicted to cocaine and/or other drugs and those who have recently delivered babies with traces of drugs. The programs respond to the multiple needs of this population and provide linkages to services such as prenatal and neonatal care, housing and other social services. Referrals are made to other BARC programs or to other appropriate agencies.

INTENSIVE RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT (I.R.T.)---This short-term inpatient program provides a supportive environment to establish the principle of recovery. Substance abuse education, counseling and family support is provided. The life circumstances of each client are assessed and incorporated into treatment. Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous meetings are available. Upon completion, aftercare is provided which includes referrals to other BARC programs and community halfway house.

PREVENTION---Public education and consultation programs, seminars, workshops and presentations regarding substance abuse may be arranged for agencies and community groups upon request.
