Donating Materials
In order to enhance our existing holdings, the Historical Commission is interested in acquiring local collections of family papers; photographs; postcards; newsletters; motion pictures and videos; records of local groups, associations and businesses; maps related directly to the history, environment and archeology of communities, and government of Broward County and South Florida.
Donations will normally involve the full transfer of ownership, including copyright, whenever possible. Once accepted, donated items become the property of the Broward County Historical Commission, an agency of the Broward County Board of Commissioners. We regret that, due to storage, agency policies and other limitations, not all items will be accepted.
The Historical Commission will accept material on a loan basis only in exceptional circumstances. Any local private materials deposited in the Historical Commission will be stored under the same secure environmental conditions as the official records of Broward County in endeavoring to comply with professional archival standards.
It is not necessary to permanently give your original photographs or papers to the Commission. With your permission we will duplicate the items and return them to you, allowing the images copied to be used for research or display purposes.
If you have historically significant items – such as those described above - that you would like to give, please contact the Historical Commission at 954-765-4671 to begin the analysis and review process.
