SIGN SHOP TECHNICIAN II
NATURE OF WORK
This is technical and lead work in the production of traffic control signs.
Work involves responsibility for production of traffic control signs through the use of computerized sign making equipment, silk screening, vacuum applicator and other processes. Assignments are received from a superior in the form of oral and written instructions, frequently accompanied by sketches or plans. Employee exercises judgment in the design and layout of nonstandard signs. Supervision may be exercised over skilled and semiskilled personnel engaged in shop operations. Work is reviewed principally through inspections and the acceptability of signs produced.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This classification is distinguished from Sign Shop Technician I by the lead worker responsibilities and by the greater experience requirements.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Participates in the work of a small shop crew engaged in fabricating street, traffic and other various signs by using computerized sign making machines, vacuum applicators and other processes.
Personally performs the more complex layout, computer designs, silk screening and silk screen fabrication tasks.
Keeps standard work and cost records; maintains an inventory of signs; requisitions supplies and materials.
May act as supervisor in Sign Shop Supervisor's absence.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of the practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in the fabrication of traffic control signs.
Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of subordinates and to instruct them in proper work methods and procedures.
Ability to prepare cost and materials estimates and maintain routine work reports.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to interpret plans and sketches.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school; considerable experience in the production of traffic signs, including experience in the use of computerized sign making equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
