PARKS ANIMAL CARE SPECIALIST
NATURE OF WORK
This is specialized enforcement work in the field of animal care and regulation in county parks.
Work involves enforcement of state and county laws regulating the care, control and licensing of animals.
Work includes picking up and transporting stray and injured animals, writing warnings and citations, enforcing local animal care laws, investigating dog bite cases, informing park patrons of County Ordinances and park rules regulating animals in public parks. Work also includes planning, developing and coordinating various educational programs, projects and events within county parks.
Work is reviewed by an administrative superior through reports, conferences and observations of results obtained.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Enforces County Ordinances regarding animal care and regulation of animals in county parks.
Answers calls regarding complaints of stray, injured, deceased or abandoned animals in county parks.
Participates in all phases of animal care and regulation activities as required.
Plans, develops and coordinates various animal care programs, projects and events within county parks.
Provides technical assistance to park staff in the field of animal care and regulation.
Acts as a liaison with other agencies in the animal care and regulation field.
Provides information and counseling to animal owners regarding provisions of the law and owner responsibility; distributes informational brochures.
Prepares reports on program, project and event activities.
Responds to concerns about domestic and wild animals in county parks.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of local laws pertaining to animals.
Considerable knowledge of the geography of the County and specifically parks.
Considerable knowledge of the safe and proper techniques for handling small animals.
Ability to plan, develop and coordinate various programs, projects and events within county parks.
Ability to remain calm in unusual and difficult situations.
Ability to prepare and maintain routine work records and reports.
Ability to communicate information in a courteous and informative manner.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.
Skill in the safe and proper handling of small animals.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school; considerable experience in the care and control of animals, including some experience in a lead worker/supervisory capacity or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid Florida driver's license.
