ANIMAL CARE SPECIALIST III
SUMMARY: Under general to limited
supervision, performs a variety of animal control work in the field, kennels,
and specialized program areas.
NATURE OF WORK:
This is lead worker responsibilities
in the field of animal care and regulation and in the operation of kennel
facilities and field operations.
Work may involve overseeing
subordinate Animal Care Specialists in enforcement of state and county laws
regulating the care, custody, control, and licensing of animals.
Work may include coordinating
the field activities of subordinates, each of which patrols an assigned area,
picking up and transporting stray animals; writing citations, enforcing local
animal care laws, investigating dog bite cases, and informing the public of
county ordinances regulating animal control, and presenting cases in court
relating to violations of county ordinances.
Work may involve the
management and operation of a kennel facility and crematory, and the supervision
of staff engaged in the operation and maintenance of these facilities.
Work may also include performing the duties related to
kennel and field operations, including the care and feeding of animals,
handling field duties, and other duties as may be assigned.
TASKS:
·
Responds to complaint calls in order to assist law enforcement
officers, set traps, capture loose, stray, sick, injured, bite, or abandoned
animals, resolve issues regarding animal abuse, neglect, and/or nuisance,
recheck animals placed on quarantine at the owner’s or designated property
and/or explain Broward County animal care codes/procedures.

Patrols an assigned zone in order to identify/capture stray
animals, respond to calls/complaints, and enforce animal care ordinances.
·
Captures a variety of domestic and wild animals in order to
protect the community from animals and to protect animals from injury/death.
·
Interacts with the public in order to educate people regarding
animal behavior, animal care ordinances, and/or basic animal care procedures,
explain Broward County animal care policies, procedures, and fees, assist with
adoptions, and/or resolve animal care ordinance related issues.
·
Prepares a variety of records/reports in order to document work
activities, track citations, and/or document/track public interaction and
prepare cases for court hearings.
·
Present findings and testify in court relating to possible
violations of county codes.
·
Euthanizes animals in order to control population, minimize
suffering, and/or free up space for other animals.
·
Cleans kennels, feeds animals, assists with return to owner and
adoptions, and other duties assigned in kennel operations.
·
Investigates specific animal related issues such as bites,
cruelty, etc., prepares documentation, writes reports, and maintains files
relating to these issues. while maintaining related files of such.
·
Serves as lead worker in the field and kennel operations.
·
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE,

wild animals.

Ability to lift and carry up to 80 lbs.

to area of responsibility.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation
from high school; three (3) years of experience in the care and handling of
animals; or any
equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s
License.
