ANIMAL CARE SPECIALIST I
SUMMARY: Under
close to general supervision, provides basic animal care, performs a variety of
animal care work in a shelter/kennel setting, and performs general maintenance
duties in a County animal shelter.
TASKS:
·
Cleans assigned kennel
area(s) in order to provide a safe, sanitary environment for animals and staff.
·
Feeds/waters
animals in order to maintain animal’s health and general welfare.
·
Interacts with
the public in order to educate people regarding animal behavior, animal care
ordinances, and/or basic animal care procedures, explain Broward County animal
care policies, procedures, and fees, assist with adoptions, and/or resolve
animal care ordinance related issues.
·
Euthanizes
animals in order to control population, minimize suffering, and/or free up
space for other animals.
·
Disposes of dead
animals in order to minimize health/safety problems at the facility.
·
Performs related
work as required.
KNOWLEDGE,
ABILITIES AND SKILLS – REQUIRED AT TIME OF HIRE: (Applicants

Knowledge of
general animal care principles and practices.
·
Knowledge of
basic animal health principles and practices.
·
Ability to stand
for extended periods and to bend, stoop, and reach to perform assigned work
activities.
·
Ability to lift
and carry up to 80 lbs. without assistance.
·
Ability to
understand and follow a variety of oral and written instructions/procedures.
·
Ability to communicate
effectively orally and in writing.
·
Ability to
multi-task.
·
Ability to
learn/perform a variety of animal care related work activities.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS – NOT REQUIRED AT
TIME OF HIRE BUT EXPECTED TO BE DEVELOPED ON THE JOB: (The following

Knowledge of
procedures for euthanizing animals.

Ability to read
and understand

Ability to
evaluate information/situations and make decisions based on established
policies and procedures.

Ability to work
in a variety of weather and temperature conditions.
DESIRABLE
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation
from high school; six (6) months of experience in the care and handling of
animals; or any equivalent combination
of training and experience.
