ANIMAL CARE SPECIALIST II

 

SUMMARY:  Under general to limited supervision, performs a variety of animal control work in the field.

 

TASKS:

·        Responds to complaint calls in order to assist law enforcement officers, set traps, capture loose, stray, sick, injured, bite, or abandoned animals, resolve issues regarding animal abuse, neglect, and/or nuisance, and/or explain Broward County animal care codes/procedures.

·        Patrols an assigned zone in order to identify/capture stray animals, respond to calls/complaints, and enforce animal care ordinances.

·        Captures a variety of domestic and wild animals in order to protect the community from animals and to protect animals from injury/death.

·        Interacts with the public in order to educate people regarding animal behavior, animal care ordinances, and/or basic animal care procedures, explain Broward County animal care policies, procedures, and fees, assist with adoptions, and/or resolve animal care ordinance related issues.

·        Prepares a variety of records/reports in order to document work activities, track citations, and/or document/track public interaction.

·        Euthanizes animals in order to control population, minimize suffering, and/or free up space for other animals.

·        Performs related work as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS – REQUIRED AT TIME OF HIRE:

·        Knowledge of procedures for capturing a variety of domestic and wild animals.

·        Ability to lift and carry up to 80 lbs.

·        Ability to understand and follow a variety of oral and written instructions/procedures.

·        Ability to work in a variety of weather and temperature conditions.

·        Ability to multi-task.

·        Knowledge of streets, roads, and locations within Broward County.

·        Knowledge of Broward County animal care and regulation ordinances.

·        Knowledge of procedures for issuing animal care citations.

·        Knowledge of established customer service policies, procedures, and techniques.

·        Ability to read and follow maps.

·        Ability to operate a motor vehicle.

·        Ability to evaluate information/situations and make decisions based on established policies and procedures.

·        Ability to explain policies, procedures, fees, and ordinances to others.

·        Ability to complete a variety of forms/reports.

 

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:  Graduation from high school; one year of experience in the care and handling of animals; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:  Must possess a valid Florida Driver=s License.
