METER SERVICE TECHNICIAN I
NATURE OF WORK
This is skilled
water meter maintenance and servicing work.
Work involves
testing, repairing and maintaining water meters, and making installations in
the field.
Work includes
responsibility for making repairs to and testing large and small meters used
for accurately measuring water consumption.
Work requires adjusting the above equipment to prescribed limits of
accuracy and providing emergency repair services, field adjustments, and
installation or removal of same.
Work involves the
application of standard trade practices in maintaining and installing meter
related plumbing systems and fixtures.
Employees are responsible for determining materials and work methods
used. Assignments come in oral and
written form and are sometimes accompanied by blueprints or schematics.
Work is inspected
during process and upon completion for workmanship, compliance with
instructions and specifications, and for maintenance of established standards.
ILLUSTRATIVE
TASKS
Removes water meters
and replaces them with new or properly serviced units either for periodic shop
inspection or at the termination of service.
Replaces broken
small pipes; digs out, cleans and raises meter boxes; replaces broken boxes or
lids; makes field repairs on the larger meters; changes defective registers and
replaces broken glass.
Reads large meters
not normally accessible to regular meter reading personnel.
Makes field
investigations on complaints of poor water pressure; sets recording meters in
the field to check leaks and complaints of excessive charges.
Investigates
possibility of leaks in the county system; notifies property owners when leaks
are found in private lines.
Explain and
interpret test and investigation results to customers.
Inspects, repairs,
and reassembles domestic and commercial service water meters; replaces
defective parts and makes necessary adjustments to secure conformity with
prescribed standards of accuracy; conducts accuracy tests on meters before and
after repairs.
Keeps records of
meter performance, and of shop and field work carried out; assists in preparing
replacement parts inventories.
Performs related
work as required.

Some Knowledge of
plumbing techniques applicable to working on water meter pipes and valves.
Ability to
communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to lift and
carry up to 50 lbs unassisted.
Ability to read
water meters.
Ability to maintain
accurate written and electronic records related to work orders and test
results.
Ability to work from
written and oral instructions.
Ability
to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full

Ability to establish
and maintain effective working relationships with the general public,

Knowledge of the use
of pressure gauges, pressure recorders, portable flow meters, Meter Master, and
electronic recording devices.
Knowledge of the
construction and principles of operation of various types of domestic and
commercial water meters and gauges.
Knowledge of OSHA
safety regulations related to confined spaces.
Knowledge of the
practices, methods and materials used in the maintenance, repair, and testing
of water meters.
Ability to determine
repair and adjustment needs to water meters and associated piping and valves.
Ability to perform
basic field maintenance on meters of all sizes.
REQUIRED
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from an
accredited high school or other equivalent certification and one (1) year of
experience in the servicing, maintaining, and installing of meters, and/or
basic plumbing, or any equivalent combination of relevant training and
experience.
