ELEVATOR PLANS EXAMINER

NATURE OF WORK

This is advanced technical work in the enforcement of the Florida Statutes, Chapter 399, and other related regulations pertaining to elevator construction and maintenance.

Work involves the interpretation and application of these regulations as applied to the review of elevator construction blueprints, plot plans, surveys and sketches. Specific area of responsibility will be assigned in accordance with the requirements of Florida Statutes, Chapter 399. Work is performed with considerable independence within established codes, regulations, and technical guidelines, and is reviewed by an Elevator Safety Inspection Supervisor certified by NAESA (National Association of Elevator Safety Authorities International) or Director of the Building Code Services Division through conferences and reports.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Conducts examination of building and elevator plans, specifications, blueprints, surveys and sketches for compliance with codes and regulations governing elevator construction, alteration and repair.

Recommends improvements and changes to the plans as needed; places signature on the plans which represents an official approval by the Building Code Services Division.

Confers or corresponds with contractors, engineers, property owners, and other interested parties.

Explains and interprets elevator laws, codes and regulations.

Prepares and maintains necessary records and reports.

Performs elevator code inspections as required.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Thorough knowledge of materials, methods and practices used in elevator construction pertaining to electrical and elevator equipment installations.

Ability to read and interpret construction plans, plot plans specifications, surveys and sketches, blueprints, and make recommendations accordingly.

Ability to explain, interpret, and enforce elevator laws, codes and regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially.

Ability to present ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school; four (4) years experience in the commercial elevator industry which includes preparation for review of blueprints, plot plans, sketches and/or surveys, two (2) years of which must be as an elevator mechanic and one (1) year as a certified elevator inspector as defined in Florida Statute 399.01(14) Elevator Safety Code or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

A Certificate of Competency as a certified elevator inspector issued by the Florida Bureau of Elevator Safety and a valid Florida Drivers License.
