MAINTENANCE MECHANIC I
NATURE OF WORK
This is skilled mechanical maintenance work in the operation of power, water, refrigeration, heating and other types of mechanical equipment systems.
Work involves the operation and maintenance of generators, water refrigeration, heating systems or other mechanical equipment and the maintenance of physical properties on an assigned shift. An incumbent is responsible for checking pumps, reading meters and inspecting related equipment and making the required repairs and adjustments. Work is performed under general direction of a superior and is reviewed through periodic inspections and on the basis of results achieved.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Participates in the installation, alteration, operation and maintenance of generators, air conditioning, refrigeration and other mechanical systems.
Performs preventive maintenance on mechanical equipment, including pumps, compressors, combustion engines, gasoline motors, heating and air conditioning equipment and other major mechanical and hydraulic units of equipment; performs general plumbing and electrical work related to maintenance of equipment.
Performs blacksmith functions including metal forging, shaping and sharpening; uses lathes, drill presses and other metal working power tools.
Supervises semiskilled employees; instructs subordinate helpers in the proper care and use of tools; instructs subordinates in procedures and methods of maintenance and repair.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge of the methods and practices used in the operation and maintenance of air conditioning, refrigeration, or other types of mechanical equipment systems.
Knowledge of the methods, processes, and tools used to operate and maintain boilers, generators, steam engines, and other mechanical equipment.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of mechanical equipment maintenance and repairs.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to maintain records and make standard reports.
Ability to perform maintenance and repair work on a wide variety of mechanical equipment.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.
Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the work.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school; experience as a maintenance mechanic; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
