ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC COMMUNICATION
NATURE OF WORK
This is responsible
professional and administrative work in the management and operational functions
of the Public Communications Office.
Work involves assisting the
director in planning, directing and coordinating public communication
activities. Areas of responsibility include marketing, media relations,
customer service, citizen outreach, multi media including television
production, web site management, digital media design, and printing services.
Position incumbent serves as the acting director in the absence of the
director.
Work is performed
independently with general supervision and assignments by the Director. Performance is reviewed periodically through
conferences and written reports.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Assists
in the general management of the Public Communications Office.
Plans, directs and
coordinates a strategic communications plan to create awareness of County
services and programs through a variety of media.
Plans and coordinates
public outreach activities to ensure consistency in branding and communication
efforts.
Develops and manages
various communication programs that support positive employee communication.
Evaluates
the effectiveness of public education efforts.
Works
with cross-departmental teams on high visibility public education campaigns.
Researches and prepares
articles, speeches and other written communications.
Participates
as an integral part of the emergency public information team during activations
of the

knowledge of the principles and practices of management in the field of
communications and public relations.

knowledge of journalistic principles and practices.
Ability to plan, implement
and coordinate large scale public information programs.
Ability
to write interesting and informative articles, news releases, and other
collateral materials.

to plan and supervise the work of subordinates.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Bachelor’s degree from an
accredited college or university with major course work in journalism, public
relations, communications, public administration, or related field; six years
(6) of progressively responsible management experience in communications,
public relations or related work, including two (2) years of supervisory
experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
