ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF TRAFFIC ENGINEERING
NATURE OF WORK
This is professional and administrative work assisting in the traffic engineering function of the County.
Work involves planning and directing a group of skilled subordinates in the design and application of engineering features which enhance the public safety and result in an improved flow of vehicular traffic. The employee is responsible for assisting in the development and execution of the traffic plan, and participates in the study of major Traffic Engineering projects. Work is reviewed by an administrative superior through conferences and analysis of proposed plans.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Assists in the administration of the County traffic engineering program.
Studies the geometric design of streets, highways and abutting lands and the traffic operations thereon.
Studies traffic conditions to detect unsafe or congested situations; observes locations of possible alternative routes, or need for corrective action.
Evaluates statistical and physical data regarding such conditions as vehicle count per mile, pavement capacity and projected future traffic loads.
Confers with citizens, businessmen and government officials to resolve complaints concerning traffic problems.
Coordinates with state and federal officials in developing financial assistance for specific projects.
Serves as acting director in absence of the director.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Thorough knowledge of the principles, techniques and theory of traffic engineering.
Thorough knowledge of the operation, installation, and maintenance of modern traffic control devices.
Ability to assist in planning, organizing and directing a county-wide traffic engineering program.
Ability to plan and implement traffic engineering improvements.
Ability to supervise and direct subordinate employees.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation or sexual orientation.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in civil or traffic engineering; six (6) years supervisory experience in traffic and transportation engineering; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Florida.

In those instances in which a registered engineer signs any document for the County in the performance of his/her regular work, that employee shall be accorded such protection and immunity from any lawsuit as a result of his/her conduct within the scope of his/her employment to the extent provided by law..
