                        SENIOR PLANNER

 

 

NATURE OF WORK

 

This is advanced professional planning work managing and supervising a section and/or major segment of program administration in a county planning agency.

 Work involves assisting the director with program and policy development.  Employees in this class are responsible for the execution, development and implementation of section work programs, projects and studies.  Incumbents provide supervision, training and direction to subordinate staff.  Work is performed with considerable independence and initiative under the direction of an administrative superior.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

 

Serves as the principal professional and technical resource person within a functional planning section for activities and operations involving development management, comprehensive planning, economic development, data base systems, transportation, zoning and capital improvements programming.

Assists in the research and preparation of annual work programs and budgets.

Makes recommendations regarding personnel appointments, promotions, and dismissals.

Supervises the implementation and execution of section programs.

Supervises the activities of assigned professional and technical staff.

Consults, coordinates and advises other departments, units and sections.

Coordinates and makes presentations at public meetings.

Performs related work as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

 

Considerable knowledge of general planning principles and practices.

Considerable knowledge of sources of information, current literature, and recent developments regarding urban planning and/or transportation planning.

Considerable knowledge of research techniques.

Ability to initiate and develop programs and policies.

Ability to analyze policy and technical issues and to exercise sound judgment in decision making.

Ability to effectively manage and supervise assigned professional planners.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, color, religion, age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, marital status or political affiliation.

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

 

A Master's Degree in urban planning or related field; four (4) years responsible planning experience, including two (2) years experience in a supervisory capacity; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
