ASSISTANT BUILDING OFFICIAL
NATURE OF WORK
This is technical and administrative work assisting in the enforcement of the Florida Building Code and related regulations.
Work involves fulfilling Building Official duties as assigned by the Building Official and special assignments by the Director.
Work involves assisting with
directing and supervising the County building inspection, plan review and code
enforcement programs. Work includes assisting with the development and
maintenance of policies and procedures related to the enforcement of all applicable
laws, ordinances and regulations, pertaining to construction in
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Supervises and coordinates through subordinates the enforcement of the Florida Building Code; confers with staff members on work problems; occasionally accompanies staff in the field to review unusual problems and to give general assistance.
Supervises the review and approval of applications submitted for building permits; confers or corresponds with architects, building owners, and contractors concerning questions involved in the enforcement process.
Assists with the coordination of
activities of the County inspection section with municipal and state agencies
as needed.
Attends and participates in the activities of various boards and commissions dealing with matters relating to the Florida Building Code; makes recommendations for changes in ordinances and regulation relative to construction.
Assists with the formulation of written procedures for the building inspection and code enforcement sections.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Thorough knowledge of engineering principles as applied to the design and construction of a broad range of building structures and facilities.
Thorough knowledge of current literature, trends and developments in the field of county building inspection, plan review and code enforcement.
Thorough knowledge
of the Florida Building Code.
Considerable knowledge of the principles of supervision, organization and administration.
Ability to understand and interpret plans, diagrams, blueprints and specifications.
Ability to plan, direct and coordinate the work of subordinates.
Ability to express ideas effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to serve
the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with
the letter and spirit of

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Completion of two years of college level course work in civil engineering, architecture or related field; six (6) years experience in building trades or inspection work including four (4) years experience in the supervisory aspects of the work; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Certified as an
Assistant Building Official by the Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals
pursuant to the requirements of the Florida Building Code, and by the State of
