NURSING DIRECTOR
NATURE OF WORK
This
is highly responsible professional, nursing administrative work in the health
and human services field.
Work
involves leadership, policy development, and planning. Incumbent organizes,
directs, and supervises the nursing and/or patient care staff and ancillary
staff of a County clinical, mental health or behavioral health services
program.
Work
includes contact with local hospitals and emergency rooms, state and local social
services agencies for the coordination of county-wide services for
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Coordinates and supervises nursing and/or patient
care and ancillary staff for the assigned program, i.e., medical detoxification
unit and residential treatment services unit and other areas as assigned.
Monitors staffing, employee
issues, and employee policy compliance. Communicates Division and
County policies and procedures to staff.
Directs patient health care
through supervision of nursing supervisors for medical and behavioral health
programs.
Coordinates
and manages overall flow of work, caseload and treatment assignments of agency
health services staff; evaluates work and confers on problem cases; interprets
policies, procedures, and practices to staff.
Serves
on committees concerned with planning new medical services; revises and
evaluates existing programs and plans and coordinates education programs for
agency health care or medical services staff.
Confers
with administrative superior/s on the selection and placement of agency health
care or medical services personnel; confers with Medical Director, Nurse
Practitioner, Psychiatrist, pharmacists, physicians, Nutrition Services
Manager, and other clinical supervisors regarding patient care, education,
and/or consultations.
Reviews
and revises manuals, records and other operational guides; reviews and
recommends administrative procedures pertaining to the Division's medical
services.
Assists in planning in-service education programs and
in preparation of educational material for use in the health services programs
including analysis of pertinent data, preparation of exhibits, bibliographies,
and manuals.
Serves
as the Division’s Infection Control Officer; develops and reports statistics
regarding infection and control information relating to patients and employees.
Prepares reports and correspondence relating to such
topics as medical services, nursing program development, and utilization
management, etc., using basic computer-based office applications.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Thorough knowledge of the methods and principles of
inpatient medical services and nursing administration, consultation, and
supervision.
Through
knowledge of administrative and business processes and procedures for large
behavioral health and/or medical services programs.
Thorough
knowledge of health services principles, techniques, and practices.
Thorough knowledge of behavioral health,
psycho-social, medical and health problems and their treatment.
Thorough
knowledge of the laws, regulations, and policies governing the health services
programs.
Thorough
knowledge of JCAHO, OSHA, HIPAA, DCF standards as they pertain to behavioral
health and infection control.
Ability to supervise and train subordinate medical
and behavioral health service workers.
Ability to communicate clearly, both in writing and
orally, and to plan and execute work effectively.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with
honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Bachelor’s
degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major course
work in nursing or other field closely related to this assignment; six (6)
years of experience as a registered nurse in an area directly related to this
assignment and which includes three (3) years of supervisory or charge nurse experience;
or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
