CONSUMER AFFAIRS INSPECTOR III
NATURE OF WORK
This is advanced technical and supervisory work in the enforcement of Broward County Ordinances and Regulations.
Work involves limited supervision of staff engaged in various aspects of ordinance enforcement compliance. Work includes collection of fees, ensuring certification of technicians and overseeing the issuance of citations for Ordinance violations. Work also involves extensive interaction with representatives of the industry and the general public as to the provisions of County Ordinances. Work is supervises by an administrative superior through the review of reports and program achievements.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This classification is distinguished from a Consumer Affairs Inspector II by the responsibility for independent operating decisions based on additional experience and knowledge of operations and the limited supervisory responsibilities.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Supervises and participates in the inspections of shops to ensure that they have the correct license and equipment as required by Ordinance.
Reviews daily reports submitted by subordinates for completion of work assigned and compliance with Ordinances and procedures; maintains records of inspections and coordinates the inspection activities of staff.
Collects fees and maintains records for the issuance of shop licenses, technician certifications and trainee permits.
Interprets applicable Ordinances for industry representatives and the general public.
Issues citations and Notices of Violations to companies not in compliance with ordinances and regulations.
Testifies at hearings presided over by a Hearing Officer who is a member of the Florida Bar when the citations are appealed.
Testifies before the Consumer Protection Board when the Division determines that prosecution is warranted.
Supervises the training of newly assigned personnel.
Monitors the distribution of work for subordinate staff to maintain a balanced work load.
Assists with the preparation of statistical reports of staff activities.
Performs related work as required.

Thorough knowledge of licensing and regulating Ordinances of Broward County.
Thorough technical and administrative knowledge of the area assigned.
Thorough knowledge of the geography of the County.
Ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of the legal, administrative and procedural regulations applicable to the area of assignment.
Ability to meet the general public and to explain and enforce regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially.
Ability to maintain and submit reports.
Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates.

Skill in the use of a personal computer to retrieve and input information.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school; six (6) years experience appropriate to the area of assignment; including two (2) years experience in the supervisory and administrative aspects of the work; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
