MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION INSPECTOR

 

 

NATURE OF WORK

 

This is specialized technical work in the enforcement of County ordinances regulating emergency and non-emergency medical transportation and services. 

 

The incumbent is responsible for inspecting vehicles used within the county for advanced life support (ALS) and basic life support (BLS) transportation (ambulances) and vehicles used for non-emergency medical transportation for vehicle safety and medical equipment. The incum-bent is also responsible for reviewing the credentials of the personnel assigned to such vehicles to ensure they can provide the level of service appropriate to the classification of the vehicle and that their certification is current. Work also includes review of vehicle maintenance logs, staffing logs, and patient records, compilation of data for statistical analysis, and preparation of technical reports. Also provides staff support to the Trauma Quality Improvement Committee, attending monthly meetings and as otherwise needed.

 

Employees in this class are expected to coordinate and manage operations with considerable independence, although major decisions are referred to an administrative or technical superior or the agency director for advice and direction. Supervision is received through conferences with an administrative or technical superior. Supervision may be exercised over clerical staff and specially assigned technical subordinates. Work is reviewed through conferences, reports, program achievements, and adherence to established policies and procedures.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

 

Inspects advanced life support (ALS) and basic life support (BLS) transport vehicles for compliance with state and Broward County guidelines for such vehicles.

 

Inspects nonemergency medical transportation service vehicles for compliance with ADA guidelines and Broward County codes for such vehicles.

 

Verifies the credentials of the personnel assigned to each unit for compliance with appropriate staffing levels.

 

Inspects transport logs and files of Non-Emergency Medical Transport Services (NEMTS) agencies for compliance with Broward County code concerning NEMTS stretcher transports.

 

Maintains vehicle permit and inspection logs.

 

Compiles biannual reports for all agencies of the units inspected and personnel reviewed for use during COPCN/NEMTS License renewals.

 

Prepares narrative and technical reports using a basic computer office applications, including spreadsheets.

 

Uses agency specific computer applications to record data and prepare statistical reports.

 

Provides staff support to the Trauma Quality Improvement Committee, attending monthly meetings and as otherwise needed.

 

May supervise clerical and specially assigned technical staff.

 

Performs related work as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS

 

Considerable knowledge of emergency medical vehicles, equipment, supplies, and operational procedures.

 

Knowledge of ADA guidelines for vehicles used in the transportation of persons with disabilities by NEMTS agencies.

 

Ability to use a personal computer and basic office software, including spread sheet applications.

 

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

 

Ability to compile statistical information.

 

Ability to prepare technical and narrative reports.

 

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, ethnicity, religion, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, marital status, or political affiliation.

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

 

Associate degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a field related to the area of assignment; four (4) years of experience in the use of the equipment and/or medications used to provide emergency medical services; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

 

Possession of a valid State of Florida, Drivers License. Must be able to drive and to obtain authorization to drive on County business.
