CHILD SUPPORT SPECIALIST I

NATURE OF WORK

This is professional work in the enforcement of court orders for child support and alimony.

Work involves counseling petitioners and respondents regarding rights and obligations, preparing and reviewing various legal documents, and monitoring collections of financial support payments. Duties include coordinating, scheduling and planning of court cases, depositions, and hearings with the legal staff. Employees monitor legal time restrictions set by the court for answering and hearing cases. Work requires the exercise of independent judgment within established policies and procedures. General supervision is provided by a professional superior who reviews work in progress or upon completion for adherence to established policies, procedures, and results obtained.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Counsels petitioners and respondents regarding their rights and obligations under the order of the court for child support and/or alimony, assesses the respondent's ability to pay.

Monitors payment records and sets cases for court as appropriate.

Initiates appropriate enforcement actions as determined by the individual needs of each case.

After court hearings, performs any follow up work as required by the court.

Attends staff meetings and training sessions.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge of the Florida court system and general knowledge of the Florida Rules of Civil Procedure.

Knowledge of applicable laws and basic legal forms and documents relating to the domestic relations field.

Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation or sexual orientation.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in social or political science, or criminal justice, or related field; six (6) months experience in alimony or child support enforcement work; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
