CHILD SUPPORT SPECIALIST SUPERVISOR

NATURE OF WORK

This is supervisory work in the enforcement of court orders for child support and alimony.

Work involves supervising subordinate child support specialists and assisting in their training and development. Work includes monitoring the quality of enforcement actions taken by subordinates, providing guidance for the resolution of complex case problems, dealing with customer complaints and assuring that quality customer service is provided by subordinate staff. Employees in this classification are also responsible for leadership in special Division projects. Work is reviewed and guidance given by the assistant director and/or the director.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This classification is distinguished from a Child Support Specialist I and II by the supervisory responsibilities over subordinate child support specialists, and by the responsibility for independent operating decisions based on experience and knowledge of operations.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Supervises subordinate child support specialists enforcing court orders for child support and alimony.

Monitors the distribution of work in the unit for subordinate staff to maintain a balanced workload.

Reviews working procedures periodically to ensure that assigned tasks are accomplished in the most efficient manner.

Assists the director and/or assistant director in interviewing prospective candidates and makes recommendations on hiring.

Supervises the training of newly assigned personnel.

Coordinates Division projects.

Resolves customer service problems.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of state statutes relating to child support and alimony and the procedures for administering each statute.

Considerable knowledge of the Florida court system and the Florida Rules of Civil Procedure.

Considerable knowledge of basic legal documents used in the domestic relations field.

Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of supervision.

Ability to train, supervise and coordinate the work of assigned subordinate child support specialists.

Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation or sexual orientation.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in social or political science, criminal justice or related field; two (2) years experience in alimony or child support enforcement work, including six (6) months supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
