ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF TRANSPORTATION
NATURE OF WORK
This is specialized supervisory work assisting in managing the operational activities of the Mass Transit Division.
Work involves directing the operations function of the division through supervising the activities of transit supervisors who are involved in dispatching, road supervision and communications. Incumbent is responsible for taking appropriate action to ensure the safe and timely operation of the mass transit system. Supervision is received from an administrative superior who provides latitude for independent judgment and discretion and reviews work through conferences, reports and observation of work results.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Monitors bus operators and transit supervisors overall performance and their conformance with operational and divisional rules; authorizes and implements disciplinary actions as necessary.
Provides direct supervision in the field at the scene of major accidents or incidents involving bus operations.
Acts as an administrative liaison and consults with law enforcement officials and agencies.
Communicates with the general public and passengers to resolve complaints concerning transit service and bus operators; reviews and investigates complaints with bus operators.
Maintains attendance records of bus operators and takes disciplinary action as necessary.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of the operations phase of an urban mass transportation system.
Considerable knowledge of mass transit related safety procedures and policies.
Some knowledge of labor relations and contract administration.
Ability to plan, supervise and coordinate the activities of subordinates.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to analyze and use sound judgment to resolve urban mass transit operational problems.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation or sexual orientation.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in transportation, public or business administration or related field; and supervisory experience in a mass transit or transportation operation; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
