PORT EVERGLADES MAINTENANCE CONSTRUCTION WORKER

NATURE OF WORK

This is semi-skilled work performing diversified manual tasks in assisting all construction trades including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, welding and painting at Port Everglades.

Employees in this class perform manual work assisting overhead door mechanics, equipment operators, fendering crews, sweeper operators, ship service workers, storekeepers and building technicians. Work may also include performing light automotive, lawn care equipment, or other mechanical equipment maintenance such as lubrication, oil and filter changes. Work is usually performed under immediate supervision, although recurring work assignments may be carried on under general supervision. Assignments often include the use of standard hand tools, the occasional operation of light trucks or other equipment on a relief or fill-in basis. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Assists with maintenance construction activities including loading tools and materials onto vehicles for transport to work site.

Participates in performing semi-skilled and manual labor with carpentry, plumbing, electrical and welding jobs.

May be required to read blueprints or assist with layout preparation; uses hand and portable power tools for assignments.

Works on street construction and maintenance crew performing general labor tasks such as breaking pavement, pouring and shoveling asphalt and concrete, or smoothing asphalt and concrete; operates manual compactors; digs out holes with manual and automatic digging tools; operates jack hammers and other asphalt removal equipment.

Assists overhead door mechanics in installation of door tracks, springs, coils, and door panels.

Assists in general repair work involving rough carpentry and painting tasks; assists in the construction of structures.

Assists the fendering crew in removal and replacement of fenders, heavy tires, and similar heavy material.

Performs general clean up at the completion of maintenance construction tasks; uses shovels, picks and brooms for cleaning.

Assists the Ships Service Worker in handling water hoses, portable brows, and dumpster and trash pick up.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Some knowledge of manual maintenance and construction work procedures and tasks.

Some knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the construction trades.

Ability to acquire some skill in the use of standard equipment and tools used in the area of assignment.

Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods and work at high elevations as required by work assignments.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school or equivalent recognized certification supplemented by vocational training in the construction trades; four (4) years experience in general maintenance and construction work; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience. A valid Florida driver's license at time of appointment.
