PORT EVERGLADES EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
NATURE OF WORK
This is skilled work in the operation of large vehicles and less complex public works equipment at Port Everglades.
Work involves the operation of tractors, front-end loaders, road rollers, small bulldozers and tandem axle trucks and similar equipment all generally used in public works maintenance and construction. Operators are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the equipment and for making adjustments necessary for the particular job. Supervision is received from a superior who inspects work in progress for proper equipment utilization and desired work results.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Transports construction equipment using a low bed semi-trailer; operates tractor trailer and tandem trucks in local hauling tasks, loads and unloads vehicles as required.
Operates heavy duty road roller in resurfacing and roadway construction.
Operates front-end loader or small tractor rigged with hydraulic loading lift and back hoe digging shovel.
Operates tractor and "bush hog" for mowing roadway shoulders and removing vegetation from drainage ditches.
Operates sweeper truck for cleaning roadways.
May operate smaller earth moving equipment such as small bulldozers and bobcats.
Performs operator prechecks on equipment; checks lubricants, cooling systems, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems.
Makes necessary minor adjustments and reports malfunctions to supervisor.
May assist labor crew with assigned tasks or act as sub-foreman on landscape or construction job.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge of the operating characteristics of the larger type of automotive equipment.
Knowledge of the less complex public works equipment used in maintenance and construction.
Knowledge of safe driving techniques and the occupational hazards of motorized equipment operation.
Ability to operate the assigned equipment in the prescribed manner.
Ability to detect malfunctions while operating heavy equipment.
Ability to make minor adjustments and to do minor servicing of assigned automotive equipment.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.
Skill in the operation of heavy automotive and public works equipment.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school or equivalent recognized certification; two (2) years experience in the operation of heavy vehicular equipment including dump trucks and truck tractors; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Possession of a valid Florida Class B Commercial Driver's License at time of appointment.
