PORT EVERGLADES GROUNDSKEEPER

NATURE OF WORK

This is manual and semiskilled gardening and groundskeeping work at Port Everglades.

Work involves the development and care of grounds, shrubbery and plants, and the performance of irrigation maintenance and repairs. An employee in this class is required to participate in the work, and may supervise the activities of subordinates engaged in mowing grass, planting and transplanting shrubs, fertilizing and, trimming and cutting trees in Port facilities.

Work is performed with some independence of action within established routines. Work is reviewed through inspections of areas maintained.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Mows grass; plants and transplants shrubs; fertilizes lawn and plants; trims bushes and trees.

Sprays lawns and shrubs to control insects, diseases, and pests.

Uses standard gardening tools in maintenance work; performs irrigation system maintenance and repairs; waters plants manually, as required.

Operates power mowers, trimmers, sprayers, chain saws, and other tools; maintains equipment in good working condition.

Rakes and removes grass cuttings and leaves; sweeps adjacent streets and walkways; loads and unloads soil, sand, sod, rock, gravel and other ground covering materials, as required.

May work on a ladder or lift to trim or cut trees and other plants.

May supervise the activities of subordinate workers assigned to assist in the performance of gardening and groundskeeping.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge of the principles, practices and treatment of soils, grasses, and plants.

Knowledge of effective remedial measures to control diseases, insects and pests that attack plants and grass.

Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

Knowledge of the materials and tools needed to perform irrigation system maintenance and repairs.

Some knowledge of types of fertilizer and chemicals used in soils, and methods used in preparing them for use.

Ability to perform gardening and groundskeeping tasks and irrigation system maintenance and repairs in assigned areas.

Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods in all weather conditions.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.

Skill in use of tools, materials and equipment common to lawn and shrub maintenance.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school or equivalent recognized certification; six (6) months experience in gardening, nursery or groundskeeping work; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience. A valid Florida driver's license at time of appointment.
