PORT EVERGLADES AIR CONDITIONING MECHANIC
NATURE OF WORK
This is skilled work in mechanical refrigeration in the installation, maintenance and repair of refrigeration equipment, air conditioning systems and centrifugal chillers.
Work involves the servicing of air-conditioning systems and units, refrigerators, water cooling systems and related equipment utilized in a wide variety of county facilities and buildings. Work includes determining work methods and procedures and frequent participation in refrigeration assignments, as well as responsibility for the quality of work produced. Employees receive assignments in oral or written form, frequently accompanied by sketches, diagrams, and blueprints. Work is reviewed by technical and administrative supervisor for conformance with instructions and for adherence to established codes and regulations.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Performs the overhaul and servicing of air conditioning and
refrigeration units by checking the repair, replacement, and adjustment of worn or broken parts on condensers, compressors, and water and vacuum pumps, and the testing of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment for proper operation and refrigerant leaks.
Performs the removal and replacement of motors, pumps, shafts, and bearings.
Performs the rebuilding, repairs and painting of wood and metal cooling towers and fans.
Starts and observes equipment operation; reads gauges and instruments such as volt-ohm meters, determines temperature, velocity and humidity factors using air and water temperature gauges, adjusts mechanisms such as valves, controls and pumps to control level of fluid, pressure and temperature.
Removes contaminants from system and charges with specified amount and type of refrigerant; checks gauges and conducts a preventive maintenance program.
Maintains effective and efficient working conditions.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of practices, methods, materials, test instruments and tools commonly used in the repair and service of various types of refrigeration equipment.
Considerable knowledge of the mechanical operation and repair characteristics of various kinds of refrigerating equipment.
Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved.
Ability to detect defects in machinery and make repairs.
Ability to work from specifications, blueprints, and oral and written instructions and to prepare working sketches.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.
Skill in the usage of the various tools, equipment and materials used in refrigeration repairs.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school or equivalent recognized certification and four (4) years experience as a journey level air conditioning mechanic; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a Universal Certification as issued by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and a valid Florida Driver's License at the time of appointment.
