PORT EVERGLADES OVERHEAD DOOR MECHANIC

NATURE OF WORK

This is skilled work in the inspection, maintenance and repair of overhead doors, cargo dock levelers, automatic sliding doors, and motorized gates at Port Everglades.

Employee performs visual inspections of door panels for rust or serious dents which would interfere with the smooth operation of the door, and makes necessary repairs or replacements. Employee also performs welding and repairs using a cutting torch; initiates and maintains a preventative maintenance program; and keeps appropriate service records. Work is performed with some independence under the general supervision of a superior. Work is reviewed in progress and upon completion.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Repairs and replaces a variety of overhead doors and motorized gates at the Port; insures that the bottom weather seal is sealing in the step plate and that door rollers are operating freely in the door side guards.

Repairs and adjusts manual chain hoist operating assembly and lubricating as required; adjusts cargo dock levelers and automatic sliding doors.

Inspects coil sheets to insure that they are securely attached to frame assembly; maintains and replaces counter balance assemblies.

Performs general repair including welding and using a cutting torch as required.

Performs all general and preventative maintenance including lubrication, changing filters and oil, miscellaneous metal epairs including surface preparation and painting.

Maintains appropriate service records.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge of the materials, equipment, and labor methods commonly employed in repairing or reconstructing mechanical, electrical doors and gates.

Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and practices used in the repair of overhead doors and motorized gates.

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods in all weather conditions.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.

Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the maintenance and renovation of advanced mechanical equipment.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school or equivalent recognized certification; five (5) years experience in manufacturing, repairing, or installing industrial overhead doors and cargo levelers, automatic doors and motorized gates including one (1) year experience in welding; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience. A valid Florida driver's license at time of appointment.
