PORT EVERGLADES CARPENTER
NATURE OF WORK
This is skilled work involving rough and finish carpentry and millwork.
Work involves planning, layout, and performing carpentry work of average difficulty and carrying out assignments necessary to construct and maintain structural woodwork. Work assignments are ordinarily received orally or in the form of sketches, blueprints or written instructions and assignments. Work also involves making estimates of time and material required for assigned tasks; keeping simple records; and supervising and instructing semi-skilled and unskilled helpers. Work is subject to inspection while in progress and is checked upon completion.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Performs construction, alteration, installation, repair and maintenance of buildings, partitions, floors, stairways, concrete forms, furniture, fences, doors, cabinets, signs and related carpentry work.
Cuts lumber; receives and stores lumber, and keeps records of lumber and other materials used.
Performs skilled bench work in a carpenter shop operating power saws, joiners, planers, wood lathes and boring, mortising and sanding machines; directs activities of craftsmen and helpers in the shop.
Makes estimates of time and materials for assigned tasks; makes sketches for subordinates to follow; keeps time and work records; prepares and submits reports.
Assists in the preparation of blueprints and sketches for new construction and maintenance projects.
Keeps time records; daily log of activities; prepares labor and material estimates; prepares material requisitions; and prepares work reports and drawings as required.
Inspects work for quality and conformance to specifications and instructions.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and tools of the carpentry trade, and the quality and uses of various woods and materials.
Considerable knowledge of the Florida Building Code, local fire codes, federal ADA codes, and applicable local codes.
Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and the safety precautions of the trade.
Considerable knowledge of the installation of ceramic and vinyl tile, acoustic tile ceilings and framework, plaster and stucco, and bathroom partitions and related hardware.
Considerable knowledge of installation of drywall structures, doors and door frames, and windows and window frames.
Considerable knowledge of construction of concrete forms, and various types of cabinets and hardwood furniture.
Considerable knowledge of the coating of assembled articles with formica, stain, varnish and paint.
Ability to plan, layout, and perform the work of a journey level carpenter.
Ability to make accurate estimates to time and materials.
Ability to work from specifications, blueprints, and oral and written instructions and to prepare working sketches.
Ability to verify the trueness of structures with a plumb bob, carpenter's level, or transit.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, handicap, or political affiliation.
Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment, and materials of the carpentry trade.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school or equivalent recognized certification; four (4) years experience as a journey level carpenter; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience. Completion of a carpentry apprenticeship/ training program and two (2) years supervisory experience preferred. A valid Florida driver's license at time of appointment.
