PORT EVERGLADES LINEHANDLER
NATURE OF WORK
This is manual work involved in the securing and removing of ship's dock lines at the Port.
Work involves catching lines heaved from ships attempting to dock and dragging lines to bollards on docks and slipping eyes of docking lines over bollards.
Work also involves driving vehicles to pull dock lines and removal of docking lines when ships depart.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Catches and throws heaving lines from ships docking.
Pulls mooring lines down the dock and secure to bollards.
Removes mooring lines from bollards.
Drives line handling equipment.
Maintains line handling equipment.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods in all weather conditions.
Ability to understand and express ideas effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to react promptly and appropriately in emergency situations.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
Ability to pass a basic swim test.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school or an equivalent recognized certification and two (2) years of experience as a port linehandler, or shipboard deck department member, or in tug and towing operations, or heavy industrial manual work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
