EQUAL OPPORTUNITY ASSISTANT

NATURE OF WORK

This is para-professional administrative work assisting in the provision of equal employment opportunity and/or Small Business Development Division program services.

Work involves performing a variety of tasks which include complainant interviewing, record keeping, compiling data, preparing reports, and related assigned duties. Position incumbent assists in conducting investigations, certifications and the delivery of business services, and ensuring contract compliance. Work requires exercising some initiative and independent judgment within established procedures. Supervision is provided by a professional superior who reviews work for accuracy and adherence to established policies and procedures.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Interviews and assists employees, co-workers and applicants with certification applications, and complaints of discrimination; prepares certification and complaint forms and records, tracks and assembles basic pertinent information for performance measurements and standard record-keeping purposes.; drafts case reports required by law.

Prepares and assembles information for dissemination.

Receives and responds to employment inquiries from employees, general public and minority-oriented organizations.

Assists in the conduct of equal opportunity and/or Small Business Development Division workshops for new employees and established businesses.

Schedules, coordinates and assists in training activities.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge of the laws, rules, regulations, and policies governing equal employment opportunity, Minority and Women Owned and Small Business certification under federal, state, and county ordinances.

Knowledge of business English, spelling, and arithmetic.

Ability to interpret various federal, state, and county statutes concerning equal employment opportunity, Minority and Women Owned  Business Enterprise certification and opportunities for Small Business Enterprises.

Ability to exercise good judgment in counseling and in assisting in the resolution of complaints.

Ability to search for and compile data from files and other sources applicable to the topic of concern.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, marital status or political affiliation

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school supplemented by coursework in statistics or business subjects; two (2) years experience in equal employment opportunity work, race and gender neutral and Minority and Women Owned  Business Enterprise work in a para-professional capacity; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
