MEDICAL/LEGAL INVESTIGATOR SUPERVISOR
NATURE OF WORK
This
is supervisory, technical, laboratory and investigative work in the Office of
the Medical Examiner.
Work
involves supervising the work of subordinate investigators and support staff
and interviewing and research in office and field settings to determine cause
and manner of death
Employees
in this class are responsible directly to the Medical Examiner for field
investigations. Exercises considerable independent judgment
and expertise in daily operations. Supervision is provided by an
administrative superior and the Medical Examiner through conferences, review of
reports, and direct observation.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Approves
and signs certificates and permits issued by the Medical Examiner's Office,
acting as a sub-registrar in the absence of state designated personnel.
Assists
in preparing budgets and oversees budget issues of the Investigations Section.
Determines
whether cases are appropriately under the jurisdiction of the Medical Examiner;
refers cases to police where appropriate; serves as liaison for the Medical
Examiner’s Office to the medical community, funeral directors, law enforcement
agencies and the public.
Participates directly in the investigation of the
more difficult cases.
Plans,
assigns, and supervises the work of the medical/legal investigative and support
staff; assists subordinates with interviewing in the more difficult cases and
in resolving complaints.
Prepares narrative and technical reports using
computer based applications.
Responsible
for ensuring that fact-finding information reports are compiled and recorded in
the case records; prepares reports using basic computer-based office
applications; serves as liaison to other sections of the Medical Examiner's
Office and other agencies regarding case findings and progress.
Supervises
and trains subordinates in crime laboratory techniques.
Uses a personal computer.
Works
directly with the Medical Examiner in analyzing information collected in the
field.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable
knowledge of the Florida Statutes which apply to the work of the Medical
Examiner's Office including issuance of certificates and permits.
Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices
of criminology.
Considerable knowledge of the office procedures of
the Medical Examiner's Office.
Considerable knowledge of medical terminology,
physiology, anatomy and crime laboratory techniques including photography.
Knowledge of the geography of the county.
Ability to interview for fact finding purposes.
Ability to supervise and train subordinate employees.
Ability to communicate effectively. orally and in writing.
Ability
to demonstrate a mature, respectful approach to disagreeable phases of work
involved.
Ability to write reports using computer-based
applications.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Bachelor’s
degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in
medical technology, biology, criminology, law, or other field closely related
to this assignment; four (4) years of experience in criminal investigation
including two (2) years of experience in the use of medical terminology and two
(2) years of supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of relevant
training and experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Position
involves field work and driving is required.
