ENVIRONMENTAL LABORATORY
TECHNICIAN
NATURE OF WORK
This
is technical environmental laboratory work collecting environmental samples and
performing a variety of biological and chemical analyses for environmental
monitoring, regulatory compliance, and assessment purposes.
Incumbents
perform microbiological and chemical analyses including sampling of air, water,
waste water, soil, and hazardous materials.
Employees
in this class work with independence within established laboratory procedures
and policies. Work requires speed and accuracy in conducting sampling and
analyses. Work is subject to review by a technical superior for adherence to
established standards.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Collects
and analyzes samples such as air samples, sewage treatment effluents, ground
and surface water samples, and domestic and industrial wastes.
Transcribes
data from charts and performs calculations appropriate to the particular sample
and specific tests.
Obtains
samples such as sewage treatment effluents, ground and surface water, and domestic
and industrial wastes. Thoroughly
documents sampling activities through written reports, forms and data entry
into the laboratory information management system program.
Calibrates
field and laboratory instrumentation using calibration standards.
Performs
quality control runs with current controls and calibration standards.
Performs
field analyses for various physical parameters.
Prepares
specimens for laboratory analyses and culture; prepares reagents, and stains
slides.
Assists
chemists and/or other technical staff as required.
May
collect samples from and evaluate waste water sources.
Records
and tabulates data; prepares charts and graphs.
Performs
maintenance of laboratory equipment including cleaning or washing glassware.
Performs
general laboratory housekeeping/cleaning work.
Performs
maintenance on field sampling gear and field equipment.
Performs
related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge
of microbiology and/or chemistry.
Knowledge
of terminology, practices and techniques of laboratory work.
Knowledge
of FDEP methods for the collection of samples from ground and surface water and
industrial and domestic waste water.
Knowledge
of the methods for the collection of samples such as EPA and FDEP methods for
the collection of samples from ground and surface water and industrial and domestic
waste water.
Knowledge
of modern laboratory equipment and scientific instruments.
Knowledge
of the principles and practices of chemical analysis.
Ability
to perform assigned laboratory related tasks according to standard methods to
meet quality control criteria.
Ability
to prepare accurate and complete reports of laboratory findings.
Ability
to use basic computer office software applications.
Ability to swim.
Ability
to lift and transport samples, equipment and related work items up to 25 pounds without
assistance.
Ability
to operate machines or equipment common to an environmental laboratory.
Ability
to operate assigned motor vehicles and equipment.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Completion
of two (2) years of college level course work in chemistry or closely related
field; two (2) years of experience in environmental laboratory technician work
which includes sampling or analyses of air, water, domestic or industrial waste
water, or soil; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and
experience.
