ANIMAL CARE SUPERVISOR
NATURE OF WORK
This is supervisory work in the field of animal care and regulation and in the operation of kennel facilities.
Work involves supervising subordinate Animal Care Specialists in enforcement of state and county laws regulating the care, custody, control, and licensing of animals; and the development and implementation of programs relating to animal welfare.
Work includes coordinating the field activities of subordinates, each of which patrols an assigned area, picking up and transporting stray animals; writing citations, enforcing local animal care laws, investigating dog bite cases, and informing the public of county ordinances regulating animal control.
Work may involve the management and operation of a kennel facility and crematory, and the supervision of staff engaged in the operation and maintenance of these facilities.
Work may involve the research of best practices and the development and implementation of specialized programs relating to the care and welfare of animals.
Work is reviewed through reports, conferences, and observation of results obtained.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Supervises and coordinates field activities of the animal care operations of an assigned large county area.
Supervises and manages the operation of a kennel facility and crematory; may be required to perform euthanasia as needed.
Supervises subordinates involved in the euthanization of animals, and in answering calls regarding complaints of vicious, diseased, or stray dogs and other animal problems.
Represents the division in court on appeals of citations and maintains records necessary for court appearances; initiates action on notices of court appeal dates.
Represents the division at community events relating to animal issues; and, conducts meetings and workshops with animal welfare groups and interested citizens.
Develops, recommends, and writes standard operating and internal procedures.
Develops and implements animal programs.
Participates in all phases of animal care and regulation activities as required.
Provides information and counseling to animal owners regarding provisions of the law; distributes informational brochures.
Prepares reports on activities of subordinates; initiates and issues disciplinary action as required.
Prepares operating permit renewal applications for crematory/incinerator operation.
Prepares letters to citizens as required.
Responsible for operation of customer service counter. Serves as division

Considerable knowledge of local laws pertaining to animals.

Considerable knowledge of the safe and proper techniques for handling small animals.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school; four (4) years experience in the care and control of animals in a kennel or shelter facility, two (2) years experience in the supervisory aspects of the work, and one (1) year experience in development and/or implementation of animal welfare programs; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Possession of a valid
Certification in euthanasia, chemical capture and crematory operation.
