STREETS MAINTENANCE SUPERINTENDENT
NATURE OF WORK
This is administrative work in the County's streets and highway construction and maintenance program. Work involves responsibility for supervising the work of the highway construction and maintenance projects and directing the activities of an equipment maintenance program. Work of this class is performed with considerable independence and initiative in accomplishing program objectives. Performance is reviewed through conferences, reports, and general observation of results obtained.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Plans and directs the activities of streets and highway maintenance and construction projects; coordinates work programs and establishes priorities.
Supervises subordinate supervisory personnel engaged in streets and highway maintenance and construction activities.
Read plans and estimate costs of labor and materials related to completion of road construction and/or maintenance projects.
Plans and directs the activities of an equipment maintenance program; directs the work of equipment maintenance personnel.
Supervises asphalt testing on paving projects performed by county personnel.
Assists in preparation of the budget and prepares periodic and special reports as required.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Thorough knowledge of the materials, methods, and techniques used on a public works construction and maintenance program.
Thorough knowledge of the methods and techniques used in an equipment maintenance program.
Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
Thorough knowledge of cost estimating for road maintenance and construction projects.
Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of public works administration.
Ability to plan, organize, and supervise the work of a public works construction and maintenance program.
Ability to read road construction plans.
Ability to prepare clear and concise oral and written reports.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation or sexual orientation.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school; nine (9) years of experience in street and highway construction and maintenance work including five (5) years as a superintendent and in estimating job materials and cost; or two (2) years of college level course work in building construction technology or related field and seven (7) years of relevant experience including five (5) years as a superintendent and in estimating job materials and cost; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
