                                               PORT EVERGLADES OPERATIONS MANAGER

 

NATURE OF WORK

 

This is responsible professional and administrative work assisting in the management of the Operations Division of the Port Everglades Department.

 

Work involves assisting the Director and Assistant Director of Operations in the planning, coordinating and carrying out operational functions and activities.  The position assists in the administration of the division’s internal information and reporting systems.  Work includes interfacing with customers, staff, regulatory agencies and the general public regarding technical and non-technical issues relating to cargo, cruise, petroleum, harbormaster, and general port matters.  The position incumbent is the designated division safety officer.  Assignments are received from the Division Director and Assistant Director in the form of broad instructions or general program objectives.  Work is performed with considerable independent judgment within established guidelines.  Performance is reviewed periodically through meetings and written reports.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

 

Assists in the planning, direction and supervision of the activities of professional and administrative staff; prepares and monitors reports, records and daily activities of the division.

 

Confers with customers, staff, contractors, vendors, county officials, and the general public regarding divisional issues and requests.

 

Acts as division safety officer by conducting field inspections of facilities, docks, and equipment. 

 

Coordinates with County Safety and Occupational Health and regulatory agencies; conducts regular safety meetings.

 

Assists in the development of the division’s budget.

 

Attends conferences and public and professional meetings.

 

Performs related work as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

 

Considerable knowledge of the current principles, practices, and procedures of marine transportation management.

 

Knowledge of the applicable laws, regulations and procedures related to marine transportation management.

 

Knowledge of safety and loss prevention practices and procedures used in a marine environment.

 

Knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of supervision, organization and administration.

 

Ability to plan, implement and coordinate technical and administrative programs, including meetings and presentations.

 

Ability to compile and maintain accurate and relevant records and reports.

 

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

 

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County’s Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

 

Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with major course work in marine transportation, marine engineering, transportation management or closely related field; five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in marine transportation, including cargo, cruise or petroleum; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
